I often have this breakfast when I’m feeling like I need to pack in a whole lot of goodness quickly and easily. It might be the morning after the night before – not that there are so many of those these days – I’ve got far too sensible, or it might be after a weekend or when I’ve got a stressful morning ahead.  Whatever.  It’s the kind of breakfast that tastes brilliant and feels oh so virtuous.

There are many different ways to make this.  The key is not to be constricted by the recipe I give here.  Use your imagination – pretty much anything will go.  It’s a great way to use all those wonder potions you might have hanging around – I’m a sucker for a superfood in powder form.  It’s also a great way to use up fruit and veg that might be past its aesthetic best but is still edible.

So, for the nutrition blurb.  Of the ingredients I’ve mentioned here mostly what you need to know is that the protein powder is there to lower the GI of the smoothie and to keep your hunger at bay all morning.  The protein in the flax and chia seeds do the same with the benefit of added fibre and omega 3.  Acai is a South American berry with a high antioxidant content.  What that means is that it will support the mopping up of free radials that we produce through our many daily activities and can be so damaging to our cellular health.

I top mine with my homemade granola and a sprinkling of cinnamon (to support blood sugar balancing).  I love the granola crunch with the smooth smoothie.  Try it.

Ingredients

Serves 1
small handful each of strawberries, blueberries and raspberries (these can be frozen)
1/2 banana
1/2 avocado
optional heaped tablespoon protein powder (I use Pulsin Rice Protein Powder)
2 tbsps flaxseeds OR 3 tbsp oats
1 tbsp chia seeds OR oats (as above)
2tbsps coconut yoghurt (or any yoghurt of your choice)
1 tsp cinnamon
soya/oat/rice milk

Put all the ingredients in a high speed blender and blend until smooth – or not, depending on how chunky you would like it.  Add enough milk for the mixture to be barely pourable.  Put in bowl or glass, as you like, top with granola, berries, cacao nibs.  Whatever takes your fancy ….
