Orange and Cacao Power Balls

January is definitely a month for decluttering.  I don’t know about you but long before the chimes of Big Ben on New Year’s Eve I’m calculating when I can take all the detritus of Christmas away.  And when that’s gone it’s everything, in fact anything else I can lay my hands on that’s under threat.  The same goes for my body and mind too.  Surplus baggage is definitely not required.

Bearing that in mind and assuming you are with me on the surplus body baggage, I thought a healthy snack might be just the thing for a January post.  I’ve noticed that ball shaped snacks are at the height of fashion at the moment so I’ve created these as balls though you could just as easily make them into squares, or rectangles or whatever it is you fancy.  It will make no difference to the taste which is utterly scrumptious.

Ingredients

Makes about 12
100g dates (medjool best but pitted works too)
100g walnuts
20g chia seeds
2 tsps flax seeds
1/4 tsp cloves
1/2 tsp ginger
1/2 tsp cinnamon
2 tsps cacao
2 tsps tahini
2 tsps coconut oil
zest of 1 orange
zest of 1/2 lemon
some desiccated coconut, or sesame seeds, or a little more cacao

Firstly, put the dates and walnuts in a food processor and whizz until they are crumb like.  Now add the chia and whizz again.  Finally, add all the rest of the ingredients and blend until it becomes paste like.  Shape into balls and if you like, or can be bothered, roll them in some desiccated coconut, sesame seeds or some more cacao for a professional look.
